Biography

Eric Yongzhi Liang (b. 2003) is a Chinese-Canadian jazz pianist and composer based in Toronto.

Graduating from the University of Toronto in 2026 (B. Mus), he has studied with Glenn Zaleski, David Story, Chris Donnelly, and Ethan Ardelli, and is an active performer in Toronto’s jazz scene. Eric appears regularly at premier venues including The Rex and The Jazz Bistro, both as a sideman and bandleader.

Eric has performed with many of Canada’s foremost jazz musicians, including Neil Swainson, Terry Clarke,  Kirk Macdonald, Pat LaBarbera, Dave Young, Reg Schwager, Jon Maharaj, Dan Fortin, Ethan Ardelli, Morgan Childs, Adam Arruda, Lucian Gray, Laura Anglade, Virginia  Macdonald, Jonathan Chapman, Norbert Botos, and Jacob Chung among many others. His performance experience spans solo piano engagements, duo with vocalists, small group settings to big bands, playing at club venues and festivals such as the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Eric frequently collaborates with vocalist Ale Nunez, having recorded and song written on her recently JUNO Nominated album “Under The Lemon Tree.”

Originally admitted to the Rotman Commerce program, Eric later transitioned into the Faculty of Music, choosing to pursue music full time after gaining experience in Toronto’s professional music community. He has since been the recipient of the 2024 Mary Alice Stewart Scholarship,  2025 Hnatyshyn Foundation Oscar Peterson Scholarship, and is now an active contributor to the city’s jazz landscape.
